The New And Improved Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van Engine

Much of our Riverside customer base is concerned about the removal of the traditional Sprinter diesel 3.0L V6 engine and Mercedes-Benz’ subsequent adoption of a diesel 2.0L inline 4. However, we’re thrilled to announce why this foreseeably permanent change for all 2023 Sprinter models and beyond is great for you, your investment, and the planet.

The 4-Cylinder Diesel Engine Improves Sprinter Performance

Mercedes-Benz knew that dropping from six cylinders to four could never mean sacrificing power or precision. That’s why the automotive leader made sure that the newly designed engine has greater torque and horsepower capability–while allowing for all-wheel drive installation, a new feature for the diesel-powered Sprinter van. Additionally, rather than allowing for 7-speed complacency when it came to transmission options, the new diesel engines are equipped with a 9-speed automatic.

Simply put: the 4-cylinder diesel engines do more. The old turbo-diesel 3L 6-cylinder engine pumped out 188 horsepower and 325-lb-ft of torque. The new options provide anywhere from 168-208 horsepower and 295-332-lb-ft of torque. When it comes to power, the facts are in the figures.

For all of the above reasons, our Service Center is happy to set client concerns at ease regarding this modification. The new 4-cylinders are a win-win: they can perform better while they simultaneously emit less carbon.

New Sprinter Van Engine Options For 2023 and Beyond

Out with the old turbo-diesel 3.0L V-6, in with the new 4-cylinder diesel innovations. Moving forward, the following modified engine options are the new norm:

  • Standard gas powertrain (188hp)
  • Turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four (rear-wheel drive only)
  • New turbocharged diesel-powered 2.0-liter engines (168-hp/295lb-ft of torque)
  • New twin-turbocharged diesel-powered 2.0-liter (208-hp/332lb-ft of torque)
